Join Namibia Vet Safaris on our Nature Travel Rhino and Wildlife Vet Program. This group program is open and perfect for vet students, vet nurses, biologists and everyone else keen to learn more about veterinary wildlife work, volunteering and the role Nature Travel plays in conservation. This program will start with two days at our new Nature Travel Veterinary Clinic. The clinic is just outside of Outjo in north-central Namibia at the Rare and Endangered Species Trust Sanctuary (REST).
We would then spend 5 nights at a small game reserve close by. Here we will be part of some of the behind the scenes activities of the working of a game reserve as well as Rhino Conservation. This private game reserve’s aim is to conserve large game, by introducing indigenous game and predators back into their natural habitat. They are also part of a very successful White Rhino breeding project.
Day 1:
Your program starts by checking in to your accommodation on a family owned reserve in the heart of the Ugab Valley of the Kunene region. You will enjoy breakfast and dinner at this lodge and either a packed lunch or we will enjoy lunch in town.
After arrival at your accommodation, you will settle in and then do an interpretive bush walk on the property. You will learn more about the surrounding area, birds that occur in this habitat and might even spot some small antelope, insects and interesting reptiles on your walk.
After your walk you will freshen up or depending on the weather enjoy a swim and then gather around the fire for some sundowner drinks and a barbeque prepared by the owner of the lodge. The perfect ending to your first night in Namibia!
Day 2:
This morning we will enjoy breakfast and then make our way to REST where we will spend the full day, breaking only for lunch either at the sanctuary or in town.
The program is currently very flexible and we adapt to current vet and conservation cases. Because of our focus on conservation and animal rehabilitation some of the typical/likely activities might include:
• Treatment of resident wildlife and patients
• Respond to wildlife emergencies
• Join a rescue operation – could be anything from driving overnight to
collect an orphaned Pangolin to rescue of a raptor
• Wildlife rehabilitation
• Veterinary and husbandry procedures on the resident canine antipoaching
unit
• Join when wildlife will be released
• Feeding and care of sanctuary patients
• Domestic and Production animal cases
Please note that although we focus on wildlife conservation work we are a rural vet clinic and we do a lot of production animal, equine and small animal work as well. We are looking for students that are keen to learn more about working in a mixed practice – students will gain experience working on a variety of species.
After a full day at REST we will return to our accommodation where we will enjoy another home cooked dinner and sit by the fire discussing the highlights of our day.
Day 3:
After breakfast and checking out we will make our way to REST for a short last visit. Our activities will depend on the animals and cases at the time.
After our visit to REST we make our way to the game reserve where we will spend the next 5 nights. After enjoying lunch on arrival we settle in and then join the lodge for a Sunset Drive. This is the perfect introduction to our time here at the game reserve as our guide will introduce us to and give us background on the activities we will be part of. As the activities will depend on what work needs to be done on the reserve, they will vary from day to day. You will be briefed on what to expect from your visit during the drive. Enjoy a sundowner drink and enjoy a hearty Namibian meal before settling in for the night.
Day 4-7:
During the next 4 days of the program you have the option of joining in on the following activities:
• Rhino Feeding Drive:
Learn more about this endangered specie and how the breeding project has made a difference in conservation in general
• Sunset Drive:
Enjoy a game drive with a stop for some drinks
• Interpretive guided Bush Walks:
Your guide will tell you more about the habitat as well as the fauna and flora in the area.
• Anti-poaching activities and how you can get involved and make a difference
• Spotted Hyena research project:
Setting up and monitoring of camera traps etc.
• Join the vet team for any vet related activities at the time of visit (dehorning project etc)
Day 8:
After breakfast we will check out and depending on your travel plans, you will make your way back to Windhoek or continue your stay with an extension to Etosha National Park or the rest of Namibia.
Optional Activities and Extensions:
Extend your stay in Namibia and add one of the trips below to experience what Namibia is all about!
