Namibia Birding & Mammal Safari trip report

Guide: Marc Cronje

Date: 29 May till 8 June 2026

Our recent journey through Namibia provided an unforgettable combination of exceptional birding, spectacular landscapes, and memorable wildlife encounters. Travelling through some of the country’s most iconic regions, we experienced the remarkable diversity that makes Namibia one of Africa’s premier wildlife destinations.

Highlights included the vast dunes of the Namib Desert at Sossusvlei, the productive wetlands around Walvis Bay, the scenic coastal town of Swakopmund, and the wildlife-rich landscapes of Etosha National Park.

Birding was excellent throughout the tour, with a variety of endemic and near-endemic species recorded. Highlights included Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Blue Crane, Herero Chat, RĂĽppell’s Korhaan, Rosy-faced Lovebird, Black-faced and Bare-cheeked Babblers, Double-banded Courser, Gray’s Lark, Bradfield’s Hornbill, and Burchell’s Sandgrouse.

A particular highlight of the trip was an early morning hot-air balloon flight over the Namib Desert, offering breathtaking views of one of the world’s oldest desert landscapes. Another memorable experience was the Living Desert Tour near Swakopmund, where we learned about and observed some of the fascinating smaller creatures specially adapted to survive in the harsh desert environment.

Mammal sightings were equally rewarding, with regular encounters of Desert-adapted Elephants in the Brandberg area, African Elephant in Etosha National Park, Giraffe, Springbok, Oryx, Cape Fur Seal, Burchell’s Zebra, Lion, Spotted Hyena, and both White and Black Rhinoceros.

The country’s breathtaking scenery, excellent infrastructure, comfortable accommodation, and warm hospitality made for a fantastic safari experience for our four Australian guests, who joined us on this customised Namibian adventure.

From the Atlantic coastline to the arid interior, Namibia once again demonstrated why it remains one of Africa’s most outstanding destinations for birders, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts. The trip concluded with many memorable sightings and experiences, leaving our guests with lasting memories of this remarkable country.
