Sometimes, the smallest creatures and organisms in nature are the most fascinating.
Our safari group spend time in the Lichen fields close to Cape Cross lodge to watch the metamorphosis of the endemic Walter’s lichen. When the lichen absorbs the water it changes colour. ‘Xanthoparmelia walteri’ typically appears dry and pale yellow-green but becomes more vibrant, turning a deeper green when the algal cells inside become active when hydrated, allowing for better photosynthesis.
The evening brought its own surprises as we set off on a night walk, encountering fascinating and endemic creatures like Orchestrella spiders and the barking Carps Gecko.
